A note from carlos “gato” navarro-alvarez

I truly believe that there exists what I would call Curiosity of the heart. If we listen to it, it will lead us to our true destiny. The wisdom of the Heart is a connection, a feeling, a serendipity that puts us on a track towards our mission and personal development.

This has been my inspirational journey. It started with a curious child nicknamed “Gato” - Cat in Spanish - endeavoring to translate the universe of sensorial experiences Curiosity fingerprinted on his imagination. Gato molded volumes of clay, recreated images with pencils, and immersed himself in search of relics, scents and foods that would transport him to a spiritual universe of his own creation.

Gato transformed into Carlos and while Curiosity kept speaking from his heart, Gato did not always heed Curiosity’s call.

Eventually, Curiosity took hold of my heart and led me from Mother Earth to other realms where clay volumes could take flight on paper. Images from the past impregnated my pencils and kept feeding me with ancient azure souvenirs; medieval, renaissance, baroque characters long ago cast away, reawakened in my particular universe and were personally interpreted only to come back with nostalgia and intensity.

Like a timeworn alchemist, or a 19th century gentleman eager to discover ancient oddities, I grew ever more curious about the pre-oil painting technique known as egg tempera; its opalescence, almost ethereal atmosphere emanating from whole representations of the real world, its vibrant and clean palette bestowing spirituality and depth on figures and objects, captivated a Gentleman’s Curiosity.
